The diversity of actors and stories shared is a testament to the fact that we need more of these stories on our stages. Each performer who will grace the stage is of Middle Eastern, North African or South Asian origin, and they are beautifully accompanied by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.įrom the moments the lights come on on this semi-stage production, this story comes to life in a way that feels truly authentic.
The score, according to its creators, combines “the authenticity of the Middle East with classical influences and contemporary musical theater”.
Throughout the production it is evident that great care has been taken to tell this story the way it deserves to be told. Their relationship had a direct impact on the advancement of Rumi’s work, but also caused tension and disruption in his family home. Shams’ unique take on philosophy called into question everything Rumi perceived to be true. While there are many moments in Rumi’s life that the writers could have chosen to focus on, the musical explores his passionate relationship with mentor Shams-i-Tabrizi (Karimloo).
Here, the 18 actors, led by dynamic Ramin Karimloo and Namman, transport audiences to 11th-century Konya in a simply phenomenal production. With over 100,000 Spotify streams to its name, the musical finds a new (temporary) home at the London Coliseum for its world premiere. Written by Dana Al Fardan (music and lyrics) and Nadim Naaman (book, music and lyrics), the musical first enjoyed great success as a concept album, released in July of this year.
As such, it’s no surprise that her story found its place onstage in Rumi: The Musical. In fact, his work is often referenced by 21st century scholars and philosophers, proving that his legacy and message is everlasting. Rumi’s teachings, poems and philosophy have been celebrated across the world for centuries.
